This is an old style London bus …..
First entered into service in the 1950’s, the old London bus was a real workhorse. For around fifty years, day and night, rain or shine, all year round, the old London bus would be there; helping people get to where they need to be, without fuss, without hassle and without giving up on them.
The old London bus is basic, but it’s reliable, it was always around and it gets on with it’s job without making too much of a fuss. Generally it was crewed by two people, and between them they made sure everyone was happy, safe and looked after. They took no hassle and kept everything running in good order.
The old London bus is an iconic image – as well known around the world as a Black Taxi, Red Phone Box or Big Ben. It’s symbolic about everything that is good about Britain.
Unfortunately, the old London bus is not what the Government wanted it to be. It’s rough around the edges; it’s not cute and fluffy. Because of this it couldn’t stay. In 2005 the old London bus started to be phased out.
This is a more modern London bus …..
The more modern London bus is a child of the nineties. It’s more shiny than the old London bus; it’s cleaner and crisper round the edges. The more modern London bus is more refined’; it’s more environmentally friendly in many ways. It’s got a few gadgets here and there to help it do it’s job better.
Due to cutbacks however, the more modern London bus is single crewed. There’s no one out back there with the general public to make sure they are safe. There’s no one to keep trouble at bay and deal with the issues that arise.
There aren’t as many more modern London buses about either – cost cutting has seen to that. But each one can do more work than the old style London bus; just load more onto it – it’ll be okay. Make them work for longer too – and travel further each day – it’s the more modern London bus way. But that’s progress.
This is the all new 2012 London bus …..
It’s much, much, much shinier than the London buses of old. The new London bus makes the Government very, very happy. It’s a hybrid London bus; designed from the outset to be very clean and tidy.
The new London bus has help from a second crew member just like the old London bus. But this time, the second helper is just there to keep an eye on the onboard community. He’s not like the old one; he can’t actually do anything. But he costs almost the same.
The all new London bus costs £1.6 million pounds each – about 6-7 times what an older London bus cost, but it does less. The new London bus is a specialist. And it wont be working nights ……. or weekends. It’s got lots of on-board computers and warnings so that if it doesn’t want to do something it can tell everyone; and give them instructions to send out an older London bus to do the same job instead.
And there’s even less all new London buses on the streets. And they come equipped with lots of ways for people to get off; there are lots more ways to get away from the all new London bus than there were on the more modern London bus, and even more ways than there were to get away from the old London bus. But that’s progress.
Now read this again, but replace the word ‘bus’ with the word ‘bobby’.
